Details: This poster shows a black and white photo of Tommie Smith and John Carlos showing the Black Power salute in the 1968 Summer Olympics. In the foreground are two Olympic officials and some journalists, and also on the stands is Australian silver medalist Peter Norman.

The Black Power Salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico is a noted civil rights protest. After completing their 200 metre race on the evening of October 17, 1968, American athletes Tommie Smith in first and John Carlos in third, went to collect their medals at the podium. When the Star Spangled Banner played, Smith and Carlos delivered the salute with heads bowed, a gesture which became front page news around the world.
