Details: This poster is of The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by Katsushika Hokusai. The background is a beige and white sky. The main focus shows a huge wave in blue and white about to tumble over two boats carrying fishermen. In the distance there is an ice capped mountain (Mount Fuji). A few Japanese characters are shown on the far left. The Great Wave of Kanagawa is a famous woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. It was published in 1832 as the first in Hokusai's series 36 Views of Mount Fuji and is his most famous work. It depicts an enormous wave threatening boats near the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa. As in all the other prints in the series, Mount Fuji can be seen in the background. While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a large okinami (Japanese ocean wave).

Katsushika Hokusai, (1760 - 1849), was an Edo period Japanese artist, painter, printmaker and ukiyo-e maker. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best-known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, (c. 1831), which includes the iconic and internationally-recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai is considered one of the outstanding figures of Japanese woodblock printing, also known as ukiyo-e.
