Details: This poster is of The Birth of Venus, by Sandro Botticelli. It depicts the classical goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a full grown woman, arriving at the sea-shore. She emerges on a shell, blown towards shore by the Zephyrs, symbols of spiritual passions. She is joined by one of the Horae, goddesses of the seasons, who hands her a flowered cloak.
Sandro Boticelli (1445-1510) born Alessandro Di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi was an early renaissance painter of the Florentine school. He painted under the patronage of Lorenzo de Medici. His style is noted for its combination of gothic realism and classical subject matter. His famous works include The Birth of Venus, Primavera and The Adoration of the Magi.
