Details: Baron Haussmann redesigned Paris, rebuilding much of the city with the braod avenues and dramatic vistas we see today. In 1871 there was a feeling of artistic renewel in the city. This was refelected in the new impressionistic way of painting that captured the exuberance and vitality of the new modern Paris where the cafes and brasseries overflowed onto streets and boulevards.
