The Velvet Underground was an American Rock band, noted as being the house band at Andy Warhol's Factory, and for launching the careers of Lou Reed and and John Cale. They formed in New York City in 1966 and although they were never commercially successful they did develop a large cult following. Their music is considered the foundation of the punk movement, and Rolling Stone named their first album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, 'the most prophetic rock album ever made.'
