Details: The wisdom and compassion teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, who lived over 2,500 years ago, spread throughout Nepal and India, then to many neighboring Asian countries, and eventually to the West. Buddhist devotional sculptures, paintings, and ritual objects—used as aids for various liturgies and meditation practices—were created wherever the religion was adopted and were imbued with the local culture. The 12 images reproduced in this calendar are examples of the Tibetan Buddhist style of devotional painting, called thangka.
