Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French Impressionist painter. In fact the term "impressionist" was derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise. While visiting the Louvre, in Paris, as a young man, rather than copy the paintings of the great masters, Monet looked out the window and painted what he saw. He continued to paint scenes from modern life throughout his career. His most famous works of of the water lillies in the garden at his home in Giverny.
