Details: Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954), the supreme colorist of the 20th century, rejected classical representation, relying instead on flat areas of vivid color and uneven smears of paint in his portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. He changed how we see the world. The 12 paintings in this calendar are from the collection of the Barnes Foundation.
Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 - November 3, 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid draughtsmanship. As a printmaker and sculptor, but principally as a painter, Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
