The Tao Te Ching or Daodejing, originally known as the eponymous Laozi or Lao tzu, is a Chinese classic text. Tao literally means way, road, path, or route, but was extended to mean path ahead, way forward, principle, or simply the Way. Te basically means virtue in the sense of personal character, inner strength, or integrity. Ching originally meant norm, rule, plan, and was semantically extended to mean scripture, canon, great book, or classic.
