Itsukushima is an island in the Inland Sea of Japan. It is popularly known as Miyajima, the Shrine Island. Itsukushima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to records, the Shinto shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. The shrine dates back to the 6th century, and has been in its present form since 1168. The dramatic gate (torii) is one of Japan's most popular tourist attractions.
