Mount Fuji (Fuji-san) is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 m (12,388 ft). It is just west of Tokyo, from where it can be seen on a clear day. Mount Fuji maintains a snow cap most of the year round even though it is in a temperate climate zone. It is a well-known symbol of Japan and is often depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. An active volcano, the first ascent was in 633 by an anonymous monk.
