Paris, the capital of France, located to the north-centre of its country on a north-bending arc of the English channel-tributary river Seine. By the 12th century Paris was one of Europe's centers of learning and the arts, with a reputation for ideas and learning that gave it its nickname City of Lights. The Arc de Triomphe, or the Triumphal Arch, is a monument in Paris that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, (also known as the Place de l'Étoile), at the western end of the Champs-Élysées Officially, it is the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile, as the smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel exists nearby. The triumphal arch honours those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars.
