Salvador Dali is a Spanish artist best known for his surrealist paintings. He was also a surrealist filmmaker and writer. His most famous painting is The Persistance of Memory. He controversially refused to denounce facism in the years leading up to World War II insisting the surrealism had to exist apolitically. He died in 1989 in Catalonia of heart failure
