The meerkat is a small mammal and a member of the mongoose family. It inhabits all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, South Africa. Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but also eat lizards, snakes, spiders, plants, eggs and small mammals. The meerkat uses the underside of its belly to absorb heat while standing on its rear legs. The character Timon in the Disney film The Lion King and its sequels is a meerkat. Meerkats were the focus in Meerkat Manor, a British television programme produced by Oxford Scientific Films for Animal Planet International that premiered in September 2005 and ran for four series.
